Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2026 · Torus Chess Academy
This page explains what information we hold about you and your child, why we hold it, and what you can ask us to do with it. We have written it in plain English, because you should not need a lawyer to understand what happens to your family's data.
1. Who we are
Torus Chess Academy, operating as Torus Chess Academy, runs toruschess.com and the online chess classes described on it. We are responsible for the information described on this page.
India
Privacy contact: support@toruschess.com
If you have a privacy question or complaint, write to that address. It reaches the person responsible for privacy at Torus Chess Academy.
2. What we collect
- About you: name, email address, phone and WhatsApp number, country and city, and billing details.
- About your child: first name, age, chess level and goals, attendance, homework, coach notes, progress records and achievements.
- Account details: username and password (stored encrypted, never in readable form) and portal preferences.
- Payments: we do not store card numbers. Card details go directly to our payment provider.
- Messages: anything you send us by form, email or WhatsApp.
- Automatically: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, and how you found us. Most of this comes from cookies — see our Cookie Policy.
3. Why we use it
- To teach your child — scheduling classes, tracking progress, sending reports. This is how we deliver what you paid for.
- To take payment — invoices, receipts, renewals, refunds, and our tax and accounting records.
- To stay in touch about classes — reminders, one-time passcodes, schedule changes and account notices.
- To improve — understanding which lessons work, keeping the site secure, and preventing fraud.
- To market to parents — only where you have agreed, and you can withdraw at any time.
- To meet legal duties — tax, accounting and child-protection obligations.
4. Your child's information
This is the part most parents want to read carefully.
- Student accounts are created by us at a parent's or guardian's request. You stay in control of your child's account and can ask us to close it at any time.
- Students who sign in can only view their own schedule, homework, progress and achievements. They cannot upload files, post publicly, or message other students through our portal.
- Our student leaderboard shows the names and ratings of our highest-rated active students to other signed-in students. If you would prefer your child not to appear, email us and we will remove them.
- We do not use children's information for advertising, and we do not direct advertising at children.
- We do not record classes. If that ever changes, we will tell you in advance and ask your permission first.
- If you have a child-safety concern, contact support@toruschess.com and we will act on it promptly.
5. Who we share it with
We never sell your data. We share only what is needed, with:
- Our payment provider, to take payment securely.
- The video platform used to deliver live classes.
- Email, SMS and WhatsApp providers, to send passcodes, invoices and reminders.
- Analytics and advertising providers — only if you allow those cookies.
- Our accountants, auditors and legal advisers, who are bound by confidentiality.
- Authorities, where the law requires it.
6. Where your data is held
We are based in India and teach families around the world, so your information may be processed in another country. Where that happens we put appropriate contractual protections in place so your data keeps the same level of protection.
7. How long we keep it
We keep account information for as long as your account is open, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case of questions or disputes. Financial and tax records are kept for eight years, because company and tax law requires it. You can ask us to delete your data at any time and we will, except where we are legally required to keep those records.
8. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Give you a copy of the information we hold.
- Correct anything wrong or incomplete.
- Delete your data.
- Stop or limit how we use it.
- Send your data to you in a portable format.
- Withdraw your consent to marketing or cookies.
Email support@toruschess.com and we will reply within 30 days. If our answer does not satisfy you, you can complain to the data protection authority in your country.
9. Keeping it safe
We protect your data with encrypted connections, hashed passwords, and access limits so staff only see what their role requires. No system is completely secure, so if a breach affects your information we will tell you, and the relevant authority where we are required to.
10. Other websites
Our site links to other websites. We are not responsible for how they handle your data — please read their policies.
11. Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and tell you by email or a notice on the site if the change is significant.
